⚡ Wired for Success: UDS Electrician Students Power a Home—and Their Futures

In the heart of Upper Margibi County, a brand-new three-bedroom home has come to life—not just through bricks and cement, but through the power of education. Academic Students in the Uniting Distant Stars Electrician Program recently completed the full wiring of the home, skillfully navigating conduit installation, circuit planning, and safety standards. Their work ensures the future residents will enjoy safe, reliable access to electricity.

In Liberia, where termites are a known structural threat, homes are wisely built with cement. That makes early-stage electrical planning essential—once those walls go up, the wiring must already be in place. Our students rose to the challenge, guided by the practical insights that come from learning in a community-centered program.

Launched in 2017, the UDS Electrician Program has been shaped by four different instructors, each bringing unique experiences to the classroom. This year marks the return of Emmett T. Kilby, an instructor with a powerful dual skillset in electrical wiring and solar installation. Emmett’s enthusiasm for teaching renewable energy methods reflects a growing vision at UDS: empowering youth with sustainable, future-focused trade skills.

“We started another great cycle this year... I really appreciate the academy students on this trip, and they really make me proud during this three-bedroom wiring,” Emmett shared in a comment on the Uniting Distant Stars Alumni & Student Group.

With our students onsite, tools in hand and minds engaged, we saw something more than a construction site. We saw future electricians developing the competence and confidence they’ll carry for life.
